EMERGENCY ELEVATOR PROCEDURE
To explain the steps to follow should you be caught in the elevator during a power outage or malfunction of equipment?
Don’t panic! The elevator will not fall. There is good ventilation; you will not suffocate. If you follow the steps below, calmly and exactly as described, competent technicians will assist you very quickly.
If there is no light in the compartment, orient yourself to the doorway of the elevator, on the left or right side just above the knee height you will feel a circular pull that will open the telephone compartment door. Open the door; hold down the rectangular button on the side panel. You do not need to dial, the phone will automatically dial a Control Center. A red light will come on within thirty seconds. Press the button to talk and release the button to listen. They will ask you which elevator you are in. The number of the elevator is located on the inside of the telephone compartment door.
Explain that you are trapped in an elevator at Overlook III and need assistance. If you are frightened or ill, ask the person on the other end to stay on the line with you. If you are deathly ill, tell the person on the other end you need emergency assistance, and they will send the Fire Department.
The Control Center will immediately contact the service repair person to assist you in your safe removal. They will also call the management office or if after hours the security staff on site to notify them of the situation.
During business hours the elevator service person or building management will be there to assist you within 15-30 minutes. After normal business hours it may be 30-45 minutes.
